Cookie Policy
Last updated: May 27, 2026
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies are used on opticwise.com ("the Site"), why we use them, and how you can control them. This policy should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently and to provide information to site owners. Some cookies are "first-party" (set by the site you are visiting) and some are "third-party" (set by external services the site uses).
We also use localStorage, a browser-based storage mechanism, to persist your cookie consent preferences.
How We Use Google Consent Mode v2
This Site implements Google Consent Mode v2, Google's framework for adjusting how Google tags behave based on your consent choices.
How it works:
- Google Analytics 4 (GA4) loads on every page with all consent categories set to
deniedby default. - In this denied state, GA4 sends cookieless pings — anonymous, aggregate signals that do not store cookies on your device and cannot identify you individually. Google uses these for behavioral modeling to estimate aggregate traffic patterns.
- When you explicitly accept analytics cookies (via the consent banner or Cookie Settings), the consent state is updated to
granted, and GA4 switches to full cookie-based measurement. - If you reject analytics cookies, GA4 continues to send only cookieless pings — no cookies are set, and no personally identifiable data is collected.
This approach complies with GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive because no tracking cookies are set without your consent, while still allowing Google to provide aggregate, non-identifying insights.
Cookie Inventory
The following table lists every cookie and storage mechanism used on this Site:
Strictly Necessary
These are essential for the site to function. They do not require consent.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ow_consent | OpticWise (localStorage) | Stores your cookie consent preferences as a JSON object (category flags and timestamp). | localStorage | 13 months |
Analytics (Requires Consent)
These cookies are only set after you accept analytics cookies via the consent banner. They help us understand aggregate site usage — pages viewed, traffic sources, and visitor behavior.
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics 4 | Distinguishes unique visitors by assigning a randomly generated client identifier. | First-party cookie | 2 years |
_ga_<stream-id> | Google Analytics 4 | Maintains session state for the GA4 web data stream (Measurement ID G-XSB5M0FJC0). | First-party cookie | 2 years |
We use the default GA4 configuration without Google Signals, advertising features, or remarketing audiences. When consent is denied, GA4 operates in Consent Mode v2 (cookieless pings only — no cookies set).
Embedded Content (Requires Consent)
Some pages include embedded video players from Vimeo. These embeds are blocked by default and only load when you accept the "Embedded Content" category. Once loaded, Vimeo may set its own cookies under its privacy policy.
Your Consent Choices
Cookie Consent Banner
When you first visit the Site from a region covered by the GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, or equivalent regulations (detected via your timezone), a banner gives you three options:
- Accept All — enables analytics cookies and embedded content.
- Reject All — only strictly necessary storage is used. GA4 sends cookieless pings only.
- Manage Preferences — opens a panel where you can toggle each category individually.
If your timezone does not correspond to the EU/EEA/UK, the banner does not appear and all cookie categories are enabled by default. You can still change your preferences at any time using the "Cookie Settings" link in the site footer.
Changing Your Preferences
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by:
- Clicking the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer of any page on this Site.
- Clearing your browser's localStorage and cookies for opticwise.com, then revisiting the Site.
Your preferences are stored for 13 months (the maximum allowed under GDPR). After that period, the consent banner will reappear.
Browser Settings
Most browsers allow you to refuse or delete cookies through their settings. Please note that blocking all cookies may affect the functionality of some websites. For more information, visit allaboutcookies.org.
International Visitors (EU/EEA/UK)
If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland:
- No analytics cookies are set without your explicit consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
- GA4 operates in Consent Mode v2, sending only cookieless, non-identifying pings until you consent.
- You may withdraw consent at any time via the Cookie Settings link. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal.
- You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. See our Privacy Policy for full details on your GDPR rights.
Third-Party Services
We do not use advertising, retargeting, session-replay, or social-media tracking cookies. The only third-party services that may set cookies on this Site are:
- Google Analytics 4 — only after you accept analytics cookies.
- Vimeo — only after you accept embedded content cookies, and only on the pages that contain Vimeo videos.
- Google Fonts — loaded for typography. Google Fonts does not set cookies but does make requests to Google servers (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com).
Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. If we add new cookie categories or tracking technologies, the consent banner will reappear to collect your updated preferences.
